Welcome to our home on the web! The Coven of the Rising Phoenix (COTRP) was originally formed, several years ago, as a physical coven. Time has separated many of us but we continue to come together in person when possible and online as needed.

We are in the process of setting up several features on our website. Our primary contribution to the Wiccan community is our Spiral Path training program. This is a program that was originally designed and used by our Coven as an initial Year and a Day introduction/dedicant program. All of our members, past and present, have completed this program and we are now offering it locally in Albuquerque, NM. We are now pleased to make this training program available to a wider audience and are currently accepting new students. Please visit our Spiral Path page for further information.

In addition we are currently developing a detailed Basic Beliefs section that we hope will provide those who are new to the Craft, and those who simply want to revisit the basics, a good fundamental understanding of what Wicca is all about.

We have several other things in the cauldron, so please be sure to bookmark our site and visit often!

Balance

The feeling is one that we have all had, and one that we would all like to be able to avoid.  It’s that feeling of everything being distorted, out of control, or just not quite right.  In a word, unbalanced.

Exactly what does the term Balance mean?  Depending on who you ask, you will certainly get a wide range of responses.  The best definition that I could create is achieving a state where all aspects – physical, mental and spiritual – are working harmoniously by attuning with the internal and external energies.  It’s the process whereby we are living in harmony with ourselves and our surroundings.

Yet that single definition does not begin to completely describe Balance.  This is definitely one of the areas that you must experience yourself before you will truly understand it’s essence.

In the article about “Knowing Yourself” I discussed the three major aspects that combine to form who we are.  The Balance that we all seek begins to manifest as we develop each of these aspects, and learn how to align them so they interact in the appropriate manner.

When we place an over-emphasis on one aspect or another, we create imbalance.  The demands on our time and the focus that society in general places on our physical aspect assists in this process.  If we truly desire to achieve this balanced state, we must teach ourselves how to attain it.  This is not something that can just be handed to us by someone else.

During a recent study on the Tarot, I found a couple of interpretations of two cards that help provide some insight on what Balance entails.  The interpretations that I will be using here are taken from the Witch’s Tarot book, and may differ from other sources.  According to this text the Six of Cups can be interpreted as “love of life in all aspects, balance, harmony.”  If we were to take these terms as synonyms or comparisons we could conclude that love of life in all aspects can lead to balance.  Each of us could name at least one area of our life that we aren’t satisfied with.  Yet, if we can not reach the point where we are satisfied with our lives, I wonder if we will ever be able to achieve Balance?  Each of us must strive to make the most out of our lives, but we must keep things in perspective as well.  Maybe we don’t have a lot of monetary possessions, but what about your friends, your family, your spiritual life?  Would you rather lose these things, just in order to achieve a greater financial success?  I know I wouldn’t.  While we are always going to see things that we’d like to change or improve on in our lives, we deserve the right to pause for a moment and realize that we are being the best we can be at this particular time.  Rather than focusing on our shortcomings we should begin to focus on all the positive things in our lives.

I have had the privilege of coaching a junior high basketball team this season.  Regardless of how our team fares in the win/loss column I also ask the kids if they did their best, if they gave the team everything that they had on that day.  If they can answer yes, then I tell them to be proud of themselves, that they gave the winning effort.  I do not put the emphasis on whether they won or not.  I put the emphasis on the effort they put forth.

Learn how to love your life in all aspects as it is right this minute.  Give yourself the opportunity to say “I have given the best effort I can”, rather than saying “I need to do this better, or I shouldn’t have done that.”

The interpretation of the Six of Cups reversed also provides some clues as to what is necessary to achieve this Balanced state.  Self-centeredness and narrow-mindedness are two of the possible interpretations listed.  Both of these situations will have an adverse effect on your search for balance.  The definition that was set forth for balance mentioned the internal and external energies.  The external energies include other people, animals, the Divine, and nature.  When we are choosing to be self-centered it is impossible for us to be in tune with our external energies.  When life begins to feel out of balance, analyze your focus, and ensure that you are not creating your own situation by focusing on yourself.

Simply put narrow-mindedness has no place in Wicca.  We are part of the Craft of the Wise, and as such we must realize that if we close our mind to anything, we open it to ignorance.  My way of following this path is no more right or wrong than yours, and it is not my place to judge you.  Similarly, our religion also teaches that it is NOT the only path to the divine, so who are we to tell someone else that their chosen path is wrong?  By choosing to be narrow minded, you will definitely create an imbalance in your life.

The second Tarot card that helps provide some insight to this challenge is the Six of Pentacles.  This card refers to the “balance between the physical and spiritual”.  Again, in order to achieve our desired state, we can not focus all our time and attention on one aspect of our lives.  We must have an equal distribution of our energy placed on each area.  The Reversed interpretation refers to illness and imbalance.  Many times an illness can be caused, or treated, by our own energies.  I have seen many patients suffering from serious illnesses who refused to allow their situation to over come them, and this resulted in a marvelous recovery.  I firmly believe that the difference between patients improvement can be directly attributed to their mental disposition.  The same is true for each of us.  If you suffer from a minor illness often, such as a cold or just “don’t feel well”, you may be creating that yourself by not aligning yourself and living in harmony with yourself.  When the illness begins to set in, take a quick inventory or your mental focus, and your state of balance.  If these are improperly aligned, try to correct that, and see if it makes a difference.  I think you will be amazed at the results. (It is in NO way my intent to provide medical advice here.  If you are ill and feel the need to seek medical treatment, DO SO!)

The process that you use for finding and maintaining a balanced state in your own life will have to be a personal decision, likely made by the old fashioned trial and error method.  You will never know how well something may perform for you until you attempt it.  Try new methods, and analyze each of them to see what works best for you.  Here are some of the methods that may prove to be useful.

  • Magick – Use your magickal abilities to help work through obstacles in your life that facilitate your imbalance.  Maybe you need to deal with some hurts and fears.  Maybe you need to elevate your self esteem.  Or maybe you just need to have some Divine assistance in dealing with some problem areas.  Far to often we forget what power we have available to us.  It is “easier” to sit and suffer, rather than do the work.  Truthfully, it’s easier to sit and complain.
  • Meditation – Meditation will actually serve a couple of purposes in this process.  First of all it will enable you to take time out and get out of the “rat race”.  Secondly meditation, properly used, will provide tangible results in your life.  Thoughts will become manifest, and therefore what you meditation on and put into practice will become manifest.  Use this time wisely and often.
  • Devotions – A special time set aside each day, or a number of times each day,  for the purpose of attuning with the Divine.  There are any number of ways to set up a daily devotional routine.  Experiment with various options and find what appeals to you the most.
  • Journal Writing – Setting aside time during the day for journal entry will also enhance your efforts at Balance.  During this time you will be able to analyze the day, check your spiritual progress, evaluate your goals, and just vent.
  • Learn from mistakes – A wise man once told me “the only stupid mistakes are the one’s you don’t learn from.”  We are all going to make mistakes, we are still human.  Rather than beating yourself up, or pitying yourself to the point where you are useless, take a lesson from it.  And then determine what you can do to avoid making the same mistake in the future.

Each of these suggestions have worked for me, and may or may not work for you.  And by no means are these the only, nor necessarily the best, ways for you to achieve the balanced state you are searching for.  My goal for listing them was to provide you with the stepping stones for the journey.  Hopefully they help some.

Balance.  It’s a life long process of learning, and not something that should be mistaken with perfection.  No matter what happens, continue searching, continue working and striving.  Evaluate each situation that you face in light of maintaining your balanced state.  Maybe the key to Balance is not so much the destination, but the journey.

Apply Wisdom With Knowledge

Apply Knowledge with Wisdom

The fourth goal of a Witch is to apply knowledge with wisdom.  The first 3 goals all dealt with learning.  They covered knowing yourself, knowing your craft, and learning in general.  Now we are at the point where we need to being applying that wisdom.  Knowledge that is not put into practice is useless.  If you know the proper safety precautions to use at work, and yet you ignore them completely, then the knowledge you have is useless, it’s not applied.  Conversely if you start applying knowledge without thinking, then you are risking serious repercussions.  For example, you may now know how to perform a binding spell, you have that knowledge.  But if you do not apply the wisdom of when and how to use it, and more importantly when not to use it, the results of your knowledge will be harm and chaos.

Wicca does not have an all encompassing rule book that maps out how we should behave in certain situations.  However, the Craft does have certain mandates that we should choose to utilize when planning our actions.  We are taught that each of us are responsible for our own actions and decisions.  There is no “devil” that we can blame for our own mistakes.  Our choices are our own, and we must be prepared to confront the consequences that our actions bring.

There is a definite level of power and ability that can be learned in the Craft.  But this power does not come with a license to do whatever we may want to do with it.  For example, love magick should never be used to force someone into a relationship they do not want to be a part of.  If we utilize that power in such a way, it is the equivalent of raping someone, because we have forced them into a situation against their own free will.  This fourth goal is, in essence, a guiding principle on how to use the wisdom you have acquired and will continue to acquire.

Whole volumes could be written about Wiccan ethics, but a simple rule of thumb to follow is if you could not ethically or legally use a similar method in the mundane world, then you should not use a similar magickal method.  In the example above about love magick I mentioned that it would be unethical to force someone into a relationship. That is true regardless of the method of force you may choose to use, either physical or magickal.  However, that does not mean that you can not use love magick.  Physically there are many things you could do to help attract someone to you, or make yourself more attractive to them.  Dress, attitude, personality, and proximity are all key ingredients to making yourself more attractive to someone.  Magicakally you could work a spell to bring that “Ms. Right” into your life, while not concentrating on any specific person.  Additionally you could work on yourself to overcome obstacles in your own life that hinder your efforts to establish a meaningful relationship.  Love Magick can be very beneficial, but you must consider the ethics of your behavior.

Obviously the lack of set rules and edicts can cause some minor difficulties for us, especially if we are coming from a different religion, one in which you were told exactly what to do.  Wicca does not force you to behave in any set way.  We are very proud of our uniqueness and will defend each other’s right to make their own decisions.  The key to this system is that each individual must take their responsibility seriously and think before they act.

One of the best ways to ensure that you are applying your knowledge with wisdom is to carefully plan each ritual and spell that you work.  When you force yourself to sit down and truly think about what it is you want to accomplish, how to best attain that goal, and how to ensure that no one is harmed by your actions, you are positioning yourself to make a positive and ethical choice for all involved.  And as an additional benefit, you are actually empowering your magick by the time you spend in preparation.  The more personal energy you put into the formation of the spell, the more you will believe in it, and the more effective it will be.  For this reason, I try very hard to never use a spell that someone else has written, at least not in it’s entirety.  When I find a spell that I just have to use, I like to take the time to reword it when possible.  Personally I am not comfortable using terminology in my spells that I don’t use in my mundane life.  So I’ll take the spell and changr the wording to better suit my style.  This also forces me to ensure that the spell is really appropriate for what I am attempting to accomplish.

During this preparation phase, you should constantly consider the results of your actions.  Your need and your goal may both be perfectly appropriate, but are your methods of attaining them in line with your ethical belief’s?  If your methods are wrong, you will reap the consequences.  Wouldn’t it be better to take some extra time to ensure that the work you are planning is designed with all the precautions in place.

The Wiccan Rede is another guide that provides us with a wonderful process when facing a decision.  In short the Rede places the responsibility right on the practitioner’s shoulders.  We must be extremely careful when planning a work, taking into account all the possibilities that we think of.  “Harming none” is extremely difficult, and must be considered carefully and in context of the situation.  The Three Fold Law provides additional caution for us.  Simply put everything you do will come back to you three times.  Do you want to have positive or negative energy’s manifesting at a three fold rate in your life?  Is it worth a threefold return to get revenge on someone using your magickal knowledge?

The opinion of some is that Wicca is all about self gratification and looking out for number one.  When you actually stop and look at our belief’s, and especially this fourth goal and the Rede and Threefold Law, it becomes very obvious that that assumption is erroneous.  The truth of the matter is that provided we choose to follow these guidelines, the work that we perform will be only of a positive nature, which everyone involved, directly or indirectly, benefits from.

Know Thyself

When was the last time you actually thought about who you are?  With all the demands that life places on us, it is very easy to get caught up in performing our duties, and we end up loosing track of who we are.  We forget about our goals, our dreams.  We fail to create time to improve ourselves, especially in the spiritual realm.  In fact many of us fail to really know who we are.

One of the most challenging writings I have encountered in the Craft is the 13 Goals of a Witch.  The first goal, according to this list, is to Know Yourself.  This does not just include knowing your roles in society, although this is a part of it.  Each of us may be an employee, student, parent, spouse, musician, writer, child, Wiccan, or any host of other titles. Yet these combined titles or duties fail to completely define who we are.

The goal of knowing yourself goes much deeper than just knowing your roles.  It is more like seeking to answer the age old questions of “What am I, and what is my purpose here?”.  Humankind has been asking this question in one form or another for centuries.

The answer lies in knowing that we are comprised of many aspects, or characteristics, which combine to define who we are; our personality, nature, and individuality.  Before we can accurately begin to define who we are, we first must analyze each of these major components.  Once we are able to define the individual parts, we will then be better equipped to correctly define the whole.

Listing each individual component of ourselves would require volumes to cover.  For our purpose we will focus on four major categories that collectively contain all of our individual characteristics.  Each of us are comprised of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects.  These categories may be viewed as specific “self’s” that harmoniously work together to provide the finished product, that being the whole person.

In our current society we tend to be defined, by ourselves and others, based on our abilities and material accomplishments of our physical self.  Our end goal is obtaining a higher status or being more like someone else.  We are tempted to base our fulfillment and success  on physical accumulations, rather than on true peace and contentment that only comes from within ourselves.  Success seems to be an elusive goal that can only be achieved through more physical gains.  The problem is that we can never seem to reach that goal can we?  There is always some physical or material item that is lacking.  It may be a job, or spouse, or house, or _________________ (you fill in the blank).  Regardless of what that item is, our goal of being complete and happy seems to elude us.  And yet, because we are basing our definition of who we are, or more appropriately our worth, on these physical items, we are compelled to continue to strive for a goal that we will never be able to achieve.

If we choose to believe that our purpose, our essence, is merely defined by what we achieve physically, then we will never be truly at peace, truly fulfilled.  There’s always going to be some other “thing” we must accomplish or obtain first.  Furthermore, with this definition, we will never achieve the goal of knowing ourselves, because all our time and effort will be devoted to improving this one aspect, which is only one of many that combine to define who we are.

Now, I am not suggesting that we should cease from striving to be our best physically.  However, that should not be our sole purpose.  How many people can you think of who appear to have it all, but you can tell they are miserable inside?  They are miserable largely because they have ignored the other aspects of themselves.

A second category which also contributes to our whole person is our mental self.  This part of us is driven by knowledge.  We attend educational facilities, read journals and magazines to remain current in our professions, and study our chosen spiritual paths, all in the pursuit of additional knowledge.

When someone is striving to improve their physical or mental aspects, society tends to applaud their noble efforts.  When we are describing someone, or forming an opinion of them, we tend to focus on these two sides as well.  Financial success, intellectual achievements, and physical appearance are often the first attributes we notice or refer to regarding ourselves and others.  Can you see where most of our focus is on these two aspects of the whole person?  Again, I am not suggesting that it is wrong to strive to be your best physically or mentally.  Far from it.  However, in order to achieve our goal, we must give equal time and attention to our other aspects.

One of our more often neglected aspects is our emotional components.  I will be the first to admit that this is a very difficult, and sometimes frightening, aspect to focus on.  Our society as a whole frowns on emotional baggage.  We do not tend to associate emotional and successful together, or do we?  What we do is take emotions like ambition, drive and dedication and view them not as emotions but rather adjectives of success.  However they choose to look at it, each of these are traits of our emotional sides.  Being emotional is not limited to crying at the drop of a hat.  Take an athlete for instance.  When a player makes a really big play there is a lot of emotion behind it.  I think of Michael Jordan jumping up and down swinging his fist in the air after sinking the winning shot in a playoff game against Cleveland years ago.  That is emotion, and nobody told him he didn’t have a right to show it.

Part of the problem stems from our errant perception that showing our emotions too much is a sign of weakness or immaturity.  Our emotions are not based on logic, they are just there.  Today we like things that we can explain and prove with our manuals and charts.  We are very analytical, and our emotions are the antithesis of logic.  We are so programmed to be mental and professional giants that as a by product we are being programmed to ignore our emotions.

Another matter to consider is that our emotions allow us to experience fear, pain, old resentments and other not so pleasant memories.  Since none of enjoy feeling these things, there is a definite temptation to choose to ignore or suppress our emotional self..  Yet without sorrow, there is no joy, without fear there is no peace, without pain there is no healing, and without confronting and acknowledging your emotional side it will be impossible to finally know who you are, and why you are here.

The fourth and final “self” that must also be acknowledged is our Spiritual Self.  Each religious structure teaches, in their own manner, that the spirit will continue on after this life is over.  Whether you believe in reincarnation, or a heaven, or some other such place, most people believe that the spirit will go on long after this body is worn out.

So if the spirit is going to continue on, why do we ignore it so?  Why do we not spend more time nurturing our spiritual side and allowing it to grow?

Maybe it’s because we link spiritual and religious together. Upon close examination we will find that being religious and being spiritual are two separate, unique characteristics. To be religious one must: a) find a belief structure to hold fast to, b) observe his/her religious traditions, and c) follow the teachings of that religion.  No where does true spirituality enter the picture here.

In order to clear up any misconceptions, let me expound for just a moment.  I am not saying that religion and spirituality can not work together.  In fact most of the time they do, to some degree.  What I am saying is that they are not the same things, nor do they depend on each other for their existence.  In my opinion true spirituality: a) strives to commune with the Divine force, b) forces us to confront ourselves and our world around us, and c) gives us the drive and desire to truly know ourselves.  While this is a brief comparison, hopefully it will stimulate additional thought on the differences between religion and spirituality.  Our spiritual growth should not be dependent on any set religion.  Rather than closing our minds to opportunities for spiritual growth that fall outside our chosen religion, we should allow our spiritual self to lead us toward other avenues of growth.  When we begin to allow our religiousness, with all it’s dogma’s and rules, to dictate all aspects of our spiritual life, we are in fact depriving our spiritual self of chances for growth.  Following these rules must not become more important than growing spiritually.

Many of us find the lack of religious dogma and rules to be a very important part of Wicca.  This allows each of us the freedom to develop ourselves spiritually in whatever manner we choose.  My only fear is that we may get so caught up in the practice of the craft (the spells, chants, rites, and tools etc.) that we miss the whole point of the craft, which I believe is to grown physically, emotionally, mentally and certainly spiritually until we are the best that we can be.

Striving for the goal of knowing yourself is not an easy path.  It will require dedication, confrontation, change and patience.  As with anything else that is worth achieving, the rewards far outweigh the cost.  As you learn to nurture each of your “self’s” equally, you will be amazed at the sense of accomplishment, contentment, and fulfillment that are waiting.
